On the Thin Client: Why do I get a “Cannot Connect to Server” message?

Tips & Tricks

Back to Tips & Tricks

Scenario:
When trying to launch Instrument Manager™ (IM) from Thin Client, the following message appears:

Potential reasons this happened:

  • Caché is not running
  • IM is not installed on Thin Client
  • IM shared folder on the Primary system permissions (read/write/modify) not granted correctly to the logged in user
  • IM shortcut target field did not have correct domain name/IP and path location of IM executable
  • IMOPTION.ini file does not have correct computer name or IP
  • IMOPTION.ini file on the Primary is malformed/corrupted
  • Windows Firewall is turned on Thin Client

Resolution:

  • Start Caché
  • Be sure IM is installed on Thin Client
    • Insert the Instrument Manager DVD or mount Instrument Manager.iso
    • Right click on setup.exe choose to run as administrator; the install wizard opens up, choose Thin Client install, then select next to continue with install
  • Grant Instrument Manager shared folder on the Primary system permissions (read/write/modify)
    • Go to drive where IM is installed on the Primary system;
    • Right click to go to Properties;
    • Select the Sharing tab;
    • Verify/Add the Full control (Read/Write/Modify) permissions there for all users who will access IM.
  • Create shortcut on Thin Client desktop
    NOTE: Be sure to place under shortcut properties target field correct domain name/IP and path location of IM executable on the Primary system
  • Make sure the correct computer name or IP address of the Primary is added in the IMOPTION.ini file
  • Make sure Windows firewall is turned off on Thin Client
  • Check IMOPTION.ini file on the Primary to make sure it is not malformed/corrupted

infoRefer to the Instrument Manager User’s Guide for additional information about this message. In the IM interface, select Help to access the User’s Guide. The Thin Client and Troubleshooting sections may be the most useful for this topic.
